Abstract

The historiography of cities in Medieval India reflects the dynamic interplay of politics, economy, society, and culture between the 6th and 16th centuries. Scholars have debated whether medieval Indian cities were primarily centers of political power, trade, or religious activity. Early interpretations emphasized decline after the Gupta period due to agrarian land grants and reduced commerce, while later research highlighted the resilience and transformation of urban centers under the Cholas, Delhi Sultanate, and Mughals. Cities such as Delhi, Agra, Vijayanagara, and Thanjavur became hubs of administration, craft production, and cultural patronage. Historians also stress the role of merchant guilds, temple economies, and Islamic institutions in shaping urban life. Thus, medieval Indian cities were not static entities but evolving spaces that mirrored broader shifts in state formation, trade networks, and cultural synthesis. The historiographic understanding of cities in medieval India offers a multifaceted perspective on urbanization, social dynamics, and cultural exchange during a period marked by significant political and economic transformations. This study examines the evolving scholarship on medieval Indian cities, highlighting the interplay between historical narratives and archaeological findings, as well as the influence of colonial interpretations on contemporary understandings. By analyzing primary sources, including travelogues, administrative records, and literary texts, this paper elucidates the role of cities as centers of trade, governance, and cultural diversity. It seeks to contextualize these urban spaces within broader historical frameworks, emphasizing their significance in the development of regional identities and cross-cultural interactions. Ultimately, this work aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding urban history in South Asia, showcasing the complexities and nuances that define the medieval urban landscape.
